14k gold filigree cross Antique Widows Mite Coin with inlaid Rubies and chain
Beautifully exquisite filigree cross with small rubies at the corners. At the center of the cross is an antique bronze coin, a Judean lepton, commonly known as a “widow’s mite”. These were minted around 100 BC, were the smallest coin in circulation at the time of Jesus and was worth about 6 minutes of an average daily wage.
The story of the Widow’s Mite comes from Luke 21:1-4:
The Widow’s Offering
21 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two small coins. 3 He said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all offered their gifts out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had to live on.”
According to some interpretations, the Widow’s Mite symbolizes the gift to God of what you have, no matter how small, is what is important to him. The more significant gifts are not those of larger value, but those given out of love, whether or not you think you can afford it.
Cross is stamped with 14k and the clasp on the chain is stamped Italy.
