Pair 1883 Gorham Shell Narragansett Salt Cellars Spoons Sterling Silver Antique BoxAntique Gorham sterling silver .925, gold washed, pair salt cellars & salt spoons, in the 1883 (Hallmark P) No. 2035 Narragansett style Aesthetic figural shell pattern, coral branch handle spoon, that are NOT monogrammed. The cellar measures approximately 2 inches by 1 1/2 inches wide, & is marked with the Gorham Lion, Anchor, G hallmarks, sterling 2040 & the holloware mark P for 1883. The salt spoons measures 2 3/8 inches long, are marked with Gorham hallmarks, sterling & 2040. The style 2040 features a shell with a coral branch as the footer, and the spoon has a shell with a coral branch stem.
When Gorham adopted the sterling standard in 1868, they began a system of year-marks which were stamped into their products to denote the year in which they were made. Starting with A for 1868, letters of the alphabet were used until 1884 (Q). From 1885 until 1933 a different symbol was used each year.
These come with the original presentation box from N Matson & Co. Chicago, IL a jeweler that was in business from 1867-1888
They are from the family of my husband’s ancestor, Justin Butterfield, a prominent lawyer and historical figure from Chicago’s early history.
In excellent condition with exceptionally crisp detail. There are some spots inside the shells, but I have left them in unpolished condition with the original patina. Please refer to photos for condition. There have been No monogram removals, No alterations, and No repairs of any kind.
