This auction is for a knockout set of seed pearl and paste "amethyst" earrings.
What a showy style! A fancy beaded frame holds a large oval, faceted glass "amethyst" set in a four prong seat. The color is deep rich purple, the perfect background for a flower accented with wee seed pearls. These are genuine, natural pearls each hand set into the gold accented flower. Our beautiful earrings are made is yellow gold plate (the earring settings) and hang in the ear from solid 14k yellow gold ear wires.
These wonderful
earrings started life circa 1940. They are made in the style of Victorian jewelry, the so called "retrospective" or "retro" jewelry era. Many of the ornate floraform designs of the past were reimagined through the lens of the bold late Art Deco era and we see this in our earrings: delicate seed pearls set into a romantic flower but against a large purple gem in a eye catching frame. We've pictured a pair of 1885 Victorian gals wearing the inspiration for our earrings.
We are professional jewelers with a eye tuned to see beauty...and we see it everywhere. Long time ebayers know us from the many, many pair of earrings we list and sell here; those that are upcycled and made from old cufflinks and Victorian buttons and that was the case here. Sometimes we stumble on unappreciated treasure and that was the case here: these earrings started life circa 1940 as a pair of earrings but made with pinchy, slippy non-pierced screw backs. We knew all they needed was a bit of love in the form of solid gold ear wires to open everyone's eyes to their beauty.
After removing the old screwbacks backs, we added the antique style, solid 14k ear wires using our laser welder. We always use solid 14k so you'll have "good" gold for your sensitive ears...we wouldn't want less, why would anyone else? The laser welder is what makes our earrings possible. It's a ,000.00 machine which fuses the metals together; no torch flame, no ruinous heat and no sloppy solders. Every pair of our earrings are signed with an "A" in a diamond shape. We're very proud to stand behind our work and the "Ace_of_Diamond" trademark is the proof.
The oval earring faces measure a 26mm long by 19.7mm with the earrings hanging a eye catching 1 and 1/2 inches overall in the ear. They weigh 7.1 total grams, 3.5 grams each: light and comfortable for all day. For reference, a single US nickel measures 21.1mm in diameter and weighs 5 grams. The earrings are in excellent vintage condition with the glass amethyst showing some minor signs of their true their age: there are couple of tiny chips or "flea" bite nicks which are hard to see even in the close up photos.
What is it about these old pieces that are so captivating? For us, it's both a fascination with the past and the mystery of the pieces themselves: where have they traveled in the last 80 some years? What happiness or heart break have they witnessed? If you've been looking for a truly one of a kind pair of earrings, look no further and bid now!
