A delegation of junior doctors protesting against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata will visit Nabanna (state secretariat) on Wednesday to hold talks with the Chief Secretary over their unfulfilled demands.
The talks are expected to take place at 6:30 pm.
Earlier in the day, the protesting doctors had sent an email to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, expressing willingness to meet him to resolve their demands, including the removal of the Health Secretary.
On Tuesday, the doctors met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for five hours and said they would continue their strike till all their demands were met.
The protesting doctors met Mamata Banerjee on Monday, after which the Chief Minister announced that the state had accepted the majority of their demands, including the transfer of Kolkata City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Mamata Banerjee also announced the setting up of a high-level panel under the Chief Secretary to address the doctors’ demands.
The doctors have been protesting over the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, whose semi-naked body was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, triggering nationwide protests.
Apart from that, the doctors are demanding measures to ensure adequate toilet arrangements for doctors, installation of the required number of CCTV cameras in government-run hospitals, proper accommodation for doctors, increased security, and the conduct of student body elections.
